I often describe my work as illustration because each piece tells a story. However, unlike most illustration, the story is usually an afterthought. Rarely do I begin a new piece with an idea in mind; instead, I utilize the “automatic” art-making techniques which were developed by the Surrealists to allow the images to appear on their own.
I have used Automatism almost exclusively for the past two decades. Regardless of the particular technique or how many times I employ it, I am always amazed at the result. It is almost magical the way connections are formed between different, seemingly unrelated, elements within a painting. I am also struck by how an image or group of images will coincide with a subject that I happen to be reading about at the time. Of course, I know my mind could be seeing what it wants to see—sort of a Rorschach effect—however, I like to believe in the interconnectedness of the things, divine orchestration, and the phenomenon of multiple coincidences. If it turns out to be something less, I am no less excited.
My interests are eclectic and include, but are not limited to: ancient history, pre-history, religions, prophecy, gardening, psychic phenomena, the supernatural, lucid dreaming, suppressed knowledge, ecology, mythology, genealogy, science fiction, and the unknown. All of these, and more, influence my work.
My work is also influenced by other artists like Cy Twombly, Leonard Kosianski, Max Ernst, Hieronymus Bosch, Frank Frazetta, and Simon Bisley. Recently, my pictures have become more stylistic and colorful, which I attribute to a growing interest and exposure to works from Asia—particularly religious paintings from India, Tibet, Bhutan, and Thailand—as well as the Iconic religious paintings of Medieval Europe.
In the future, I plan to break away from Automatism somewhat to explore the idea of functional paintings. I can also see lucid dreaming becoming more prominent in future work.
